RF troops secure Dniester settlement worthily - FM

MOSCOW, November 15 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian troops are doing a worthy job to ensure Dniester settlement and there is no one to delegate this mission to, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said. The statement followed Moldovan acting President’s appeal to NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in which he requested support and assistance in getting the Russian troops withdrawn from the country. “If one puts aside the propaganda side of the matter related to the upcoming early parliamentary elections in Moldova in late November, the addressee of this appeal is the Russian peacekeepers within the international peacekeeping operation and the military guards of a big depot of military property in the Dniester region that remains there since Soviet times,” the diplomat said. “The first component is in the security zone with a mandate to assist in maintaining stability on the Dniester and creating conditions for further peace talks on conflict resolution,” Nesterenko said on Monday, November 15. “The second component is carrying out an equally important combat mission. And there is no one to entrust it to.”

CHISINAU, November 15 (Itar-Tass) -- Moldova’s Democratic Party has spoken out against the initiative of acting President Mihai Ghimpu to draw NATO into settling the conflict over the Dniester Region, the party says in a statement issued today.
“We believe that drawing NATO into settling the conflict over Trans-Dniestria is a dangerous initiative that infringes on Moldova’s neutral status, which guarantees the country’s territorial integrity,” the statement said.
The Democratic Party described Ghimpu’s statement as a pre-election move and said that “anti-Russian rhetoric at the peak of the election campaign threatens relations with Russia and impedes the efforts of European diplomacy to solve the problem of Trans-Dniestria.”
